The focal area consists of five sub-projects. Three of them adress the biological quality elements that are currently used in the assessment of coastal waters; benthic invertebrates, macrophytes, and phytoplankton. A fourth sub-project will develop new assessment criteria for coastal fish. The fifth sub-project, the gradient study, is a joint venture where all sub-projects will pariticipate to validate the respons of the proposed indicators along a eutrophication gradient.
