WATERS - Programme structure

Various parameters and species naturally form the basis for assessing the ecological status of coastal and inland waters. Thus, two groups of scientists with expertise in these environments are participating in WATERS, and several sub-projects are examining the respective focal area. Read more about the sub-projects by selecting Inland or Coastal waters from the left-hand menu.

In addition to environment-specific factors, many common denominators are involved when assessing water quality in coastal and inland waters; for example, the assessment of both types of waters requires the definition of reference conditions and class boundaries, consideration of statistical principles, and how to conduct an integrated water status assessment. To harmonize these matters, a dedicated group of scientists is addressing these issues through activities applicable to both coastal and inland waters. To read more, choose Integrated assessments from the menu.

A joint secretariat has the role of supporting and coordinating activities in the three focal areas and of communicating the results.
